Abstract

Background: Advances in surgical and medical care have led to an increasing number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) surviving into adulthood. As a result, we must address the long-term consequences of palliative or corrective surgery, with heart failure being one of the most common and challenging issues faced by adult CHD (ACHD) surgeons.

Case summary: We present a multidisciplinary perspective on the use of ventricular assist device support in a young patient with ACHD.

Discussion: While heart transplantation remains the gold-standard treatment for end-stage heart failure, the shortage of donors necessitates alternative solutions such as mechanical circulatory support. Despite significant advancements in this field, surgical interventions in ACHD patients remain complex and are not without complications.

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
