Reversible opacification of a hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens
Abstract
Reversible opacification of a hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens In a recent article, two cases of reversible optic opacification of hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) were described. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic IOL (Tecnis ZB00, Abbott Medical Optics, Inc.) and who developed temporary postoperative IOL opacification. The patient had a background history of right macular hole repair by 23-gauge vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peel and sulfur hexafluoride gas 18 months previously, and her visual acuity in the right eye after macular hole repair and before cataract surgery was 0.80 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR). She had a history of depression, hypertension, and dyslipidemia and was taking medications including escitalopram, rosuvastatin, lansoprazole, Acerycal, Calcichew D3 Forte, Stilnoct, and amitriptyline. Uneventful microincision phacoemulsification cataract surgery, with a capsule-staining dye (Vision Blue; D.O.R.C. Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center [(International] B.V. using Amvisc (Bausch & Lomb, Inc.) ophthalmic viscosurgical device, was performed, with a 25-diopter (Tecnis ZB00, Precision Lens) IOL implanted. Intracameral antibiotic cefuroxime (1 mg/0.1 mL) was used. Postoperatively, she was prescribed drops to her operated eye, dexamethasone 0.1% (Maxidex, Novartis) 4 times daily for 4 weeks and…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case series, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
