Abstract

Volume 3 of the Augmented Mind series moves the reader from AI user to AI builder, closing the use, evaluate, build arc of the series core. Across eight chapters it covers deciding when to build a tool versus simply use a chat interface, expressing an idea as a specification precise enough for AI to generate correct code, just enough Python, calling a model through an API and using Google AI Studio, structured output such as JSON and schemas with system instructions and function calling, grounding an assistant in one's own data through retrieval-augmented generation with chunking and embeddings at a conceptual level, building a simple plan-act-observe agent that keeps planning in human hands, and evaluating what one builds with test sets and LLM-as-judge. It assumes no prior programming: the reader specifies, directs, and verifies AI-generated code rather than blindly pasting it. Durable method and architecture are emphasized over product walkthroughs, and the verification habit from Volume 2 becomes executable tests.
