Towards flexible distributed information retrieval

1993

Abstract

Many years of research into better and more '-ffective information retrieval methods have yielded a collection of good information retrieval techniques.Careful use of these techniques can result in an information retrieval system that can answer high-level queries with surprising accuracy when the domain of discourse is small. At the same time, the growth of wide-area networks, and the corresponding growth in the amount of information available through them, has caused many archives and information bases to become lost in a great connectionless cloud.Without prior knowledge of site names and access methods, users are often unable to make contact with potentially useful information bases. To make the best use of networked resources, it is necessary to increase the amount of cooperation between network sites.By allowing sites to share the responsibility of routing requests for data and caching replicas of frequently used data, it is possible to eliminate the inefficiencies resulting from the isolation of individual sites and users. However, the system must remain flexible enough to allow the integration of existing information bases. This chapter will discuss a distributed information system being developed to achieve this goal. 1 Intro^^iction Information t.eval is the process of locating the data which are the best answer to a user's query. In the case of text retrieval, it is "leading the user to those documents that will best enable him/her to satisfy his/her need for…
