Advancing Synthetic EEG Signal Generation for Biomedical Research: A Diffusion Model Approach
Abstract
Diffusion models are emerging as robust tools in the field of medicine, particularly in medical imaging and the analysis of healthcare data. These generative models replicate a diffusion process to convert noisy data into high-quality, realistic images or representations, which is vital for medical settings where accuracy is crucial for diagnosis and treatment. This chapter presents the basic concepts of diffusion models, detailing how they systematically reduce noise in data to restore precise images or create realistic datasets, a process that is essential for maintaining patient privacy and enhancing training datasets. A significant emphasis is placed on the influence of diffusion models in medical imaging, including modalities like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET). By improving image sharpness, repairing damaged areas, and generating synthetic images, these models address challenges posed by imaging equipment or patient motion, thereby enhancing diagnostic dependability. Additionally, diffusion models are showing potential in the segmentation and classification of abnormal tissues, aiding in the early detection and monitoring of ailments such as tumors or lesions. In addition to imaging, this chapter also examines the use of diffusion models in genomics and drug discovery, where they facilitate the identification of genetic interactions and the prediction of drug effectiveness, thereby speeding up research…
