Generative Artificial Intelligence for Image Synthesis
Abstract
Generative Artificial Intelligence Image Synthesis (GAI-IS) tools—powered by advanced deep learning techniques such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), diffusion models, and transformer-based architectures—have revolutionized the creation of high-quality visual content. These tools enable rapid prototyping, automated asset generation, and real-time design exploration, significantly impacting industries like architecture, urban planning, and metaverse development. By transforming traditional workflows, GAI-IS tools facilitate both 2D and 3D content generation, accelerating the conceptualization and implementation of immersive digital and physical environments. Despite these advancements, challenges remain regarding contextual awareness, regulatory compliance, computational efficiency, and integration with industry-standard software such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). This chapter offers a comprehensive analysis of the applications, benefits, and limitations of GAI-IS tools in the construction industry and metaverse design. It critically evaluates their role in modeling, early-stage architectural visualization, and urban planning. A comparative assessment of leading tools is provided, supported by illustrative examples that highlight their distinct capabilities and use cases. The chapter also explores key ethical and technical barriers to widespread adoption, including biases in training datasets, interoperability constraints, and challenges related to…
