Abstract

"Generative artificial intelligence has largely been defined by autoregressive, token-by-token generation. Models like GPT-4 predict the next text token, while diffusion models generate images by denoising pixels step-by-step. While impressive, generating full pixel-level outputs for video or real-world planning requires immense computational overhead and often results in hallucinated details or visually \"blurry\" averages of reality.Meta\u2019s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab, led by Turing Award winner Yann LeCun, takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of predicting every pixel, FAIR focuses on building World Models using Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA). To understand how these models fit into the broader tech ecosystem, exploring What is Meta AI offers key insights into the division between theoretical research and consumer applications. The Limits of Generative ArchitecturesHuman cognition does not function like an autoregressive pixel generator. When a person observes a glass falling off a table, the brain does not calculate the exact light reflections or micro-textures of the glass as it drops. Instead, it abstracts the physical scene and predicts the outcome: the glass will fall and break.Standard generative models struggle with this distinction due to two main factors:Computational Waste: Predicting fine-grained, high-frequency pixel details consumes excessive memory and GPU cycles, most of which contribute little to understanding…
