Editorial for “Evaluation of Monoexponential, Stretched Exponential and Intravoxel Incoherent Motion MRI Diffusion Models in Early Response Monitoring to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients With Breast Cancer—A Preliminary Study”
Abstract
T here is much interest in identifying noninvasive predictive biomarkers in neoadjuvant treatment of breast cancer to allow for early modi fi cation of therapy. To this end, a large number of studies have evaluated the predictive value of vari-ous MR parameters including functional tumor volume, dif-fusion-weighted imaging (DWI), 1 background parenchymal enhancement, 2 as well as the best combination of MR parameters. 3 Additionally, different imaging modalities have also shown promise for neoadjuvant therapy response including optical and positron emission tomography imaging. While change in apparent diffusion coef fi cient (ADC) on MRI has been shown to be predictive in multicenter studies, 4 pretreatment ADC does not predict breast cancer neoadjuvant therapy response. 5 In this broad context, the work of Almutlaq and colleagues 6 adds to the general body of knowledge by evaluating the relative potential of basic monoexponential vs. other (intravoxel incoherent motion or stretched exponential) DWI models to predict pathologic outcomes in breast cancer before and during neoadjuvant chemotherapy. It is values
