Abstract

Editorial for “Assessment of Prognostic Factors and Molecular Subtypes of Breast Cancer With a Continuous-Time RandomWalk MR Diffusion Model: Using Whole Tumor Histogram Analysis” In current clinical practice, neoadjuvant chemotherapy is considered as the standard of care for patients with high-risk advanced breast cancer. The present treatment’s efficacy relies on the immunohistopathological classification with adaptation of the chemotherapy based on the surrogate molecular subtype (eg, the addition of anti-HER2 monoclonal antibodies in the HER2+ subtype and carboplatin in the early triple-negative subtype). However, the intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) found inside each breast cancer poses critical challenges for the diagnosis and management of breast cancer. ITH, existing at both spatial and temporal levels, may influence the validity of molecular biomarkers due to the nature of sampling during biopsy. Additionally, ITH has been described as a mechanism of chemotherapeutic resistance. Therefore, in addition to exploring molecular biomarkers used for clinical decision-making, it is essential to develop new sensitive and specific imaging biomarkers to detail the intratumoral phenotypic heterogeneity. Medical imaging, due to its noninvasive nature, plays a critical role in the staging of breast cancer and in the evaluation of response to therapy. Currently, assessments of response are conducted by ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in clinical practice. MRI is…
