Abstract

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with nearly 1.8 million deaths in 2020. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a highly heterogeneous disease, often driven by well-characterized driver mutations. There has been an explosive development of novel target-selected agents for the treatment of advanced NSCLC; several types of drugs have been utilized for lung cancer treatment, and clinical trials continue. Additionally, the management of this disease also requires a non-invasive monitoring method. However, the identification of imaging biomarkers for lung cancer, especially using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), remains a work in progress. In this issue of JMRI, Dr. Wan Q et al describe the analysis of early response to anti-angiogenic treatment with bevacizumab in Sprague–Dawley rats with orthotopic implantation tumors in the lungs. The analysis was performed using intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) with turbo-spin echo sequence in a 3-T unit. The authors overcame the challenges associated with image distortion due to magnetic heterogeneity and motion artifacts. This is an animal study, but they used orthotopic implantation tumors in the lungs. The IVIM-DWI can demonstrate tumors in the rat lung, and IVIM parameters can be analyzed. Therefore, this result is promising for application to clinical situations. It is well known that DWI is useful for the diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of lung cancer. In previous studies,…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a editorial / letter, done in animal, not in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
