Antimicrobial resistance in patients with urinary tract infection in a healthcare facility in Greece
Abstract
Background Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health issue. Bacterial resistance in Greece in particular needs careful consideration. It is important to monitor resistance trends, both in hospital and non-hospital healthcare settings, so as to design, implement and evaluate appropriate interventions. The aim of this work was to explore factors associated with the development of bacterial resistance to Ciprofloxacin in patients with community-acquired urinary tract infection (UTI). Methods A matched, case-control study was conducted in 2016 in a private, primary healthcare facility in a Greek town. Individuals with positive urine cultures (mostly to Escherichia Coli) who had UTI with bacteria resistant to ciprofloxacin comprised the cases group. Controls included individuals who had UTI with wild type strains and were matched to cases for age, sex and bacterial type. Participants were interviewed about previous infections, past use of antibiotics, medical history, and hospitalizations. All participants gave written informed consent. Analyses included conditional logistic regression models. Results 76 individuals (63% females) with a mean age of 69.7 years participated in the study. In multivariable analyses, cases were more likely than controls to report more than one UTI in the same year (Odds Ratio (OR): 3.81; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.04, 13.93) and an underlying urological condition (OR: 3.84, 95%CI 1.25, 11.85). Adjusting for underlying urinary pathology,…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case-control, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause. Reported size: 76 participants or records.
