Abstract

Preterm birth, defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality (Depa and Gundabattula 2019). Different strategies have been adopted for prevention of preterm birth, including progesterone, cerclage, cervical pessary, as well lifestyle modifications (Matei 2019; Shaamash 2019). Recently, several studies have been published evaluating the efficacy of multiple micronutrient supplementation in prevention of preterm birth (Saccone and Berghella 2015, 2016). In a retrospective cohort study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of oral supplementation with Arginine (3g/die), willow bark (320mg/die), magnesium (1g/die) and calcium (1g/die) during pregnancy to reduce the risk of preterm birth in women with increased baseline risk of preterm birth. In this study, women who received such supplementation were compared to a control group who did not. Women were included if they received supplementation starting <14 weeks and until at least 30 weeks of gestation. We included only women with an increased risk of preterm birth, including women with prior spontaneous preterm birth, women with diabetes mellitus, women with gestational diabetes mellitus, women with hypertension, as well as women with multiple gestations. One hundred and fifty women who received the supplementation were included in the study and were compared to a matched control group. The two groups were similar in terms of maternal demographics. Table 1 shows the primary…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a cohort study, done in people. Its evidence level is 3 of 5 (Moderate · trial / cohort / secondary analysis). Trials without a large randomized design, cohorts and secondary analyses give moderate evidence.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
