: Natural anti-migraine medications
Abstract
Migraines are disabling illnesses characterized by episodic moderate to severe headaches that have a strong impact on the patients’ quality of life. As an illness often without diagnosis, a large number of patients overconsume medications trying to ease their pain to the point of medicinal drug abuse, unknowing of their migraine condition. The pathophysiology of migraines is not completely clear, it is the subject of many studies. New advancements allow for the elaboration of therapeutic innovations, especially concerning unknown and not yet studied targets. From « classical » treatments to plant-based dietary supplements and aromatherapy, the community pharmacist has a predominant role in the management of this illness, equally in his advice to the patient as in the safety guarantee and in the efficiency of the therapeutic strategies. The goal of these therapies is to improve the patient’s quality of life with a decrease in the frequency and severity of the migraine attacks. The active blends of certain medicinal plants are promising to treat migraines. The therapeutic targets and the mechanism of action of these migraine-fighting plants are addressed in this work. Furthermore, the critical analysis of clinical trials regarding these alternative therapies is necessary to evaluate their efficacy.
