Sympathetic nervous system activity, tissue iron distribution, and their modulation by empagliflozin in the EMPATROPISM-FE trial
Abstract
Abstract In the EMPATROPISM-FE trial, lower myocardial iron content correlated with cardiac remodeling, impaired exercise capacity, reduced hematopoiesis and higher norepinephrine (NE) levels; exploratory causal mediation analysis suggested interrelations between empagliflozin effects on iron homoeostasis and treatment benefits. Using magnetic resonance T2* quantification, this post-hoc analysis explored tissue iron content (TIC), interrelations between TIC and NE levels, and their changes following 6 months’ treatment with empagliflozin versus placebo. In all tissues/organs, baseline TIC correlated closely with NE (all pClinical Trial Registration: www.clinicaltrials.gov; NCT03485222
