Role of Amruthadya Taila Matra Vasti and Vacha-Shampakadi Ghrita as Adjuvant Therapy in Childhood Apasmara (Epilepsy): A Case Report
Abstract
Background: Epilepsy is among the most prevalent chronic neurological disorders affecting children worldwide, characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures resulting from abnormal electrical activity within the brain. Despite significant advances in antiepileptic drug therapy, many pediatric patients continue to experience breakthrough seizures, adverse drug effects, cognitive impairment, behavioral disturbances, and reduced quality of life. Ayurveda describes a condition known as Apasmara, which exhibits considerable clinical similarity to epilepsy and is characterized by impairment of memory, consciousness, intellect, and behavior due to derangement of Doshas affecting the mind and nervous system. Traditional Ayurvedic interventions including Matra Vasti and Medhya formulations have been advocated for neurological disorders involving Vata predominance.
Case Presentation: A simulated case of an 8-year-old male child diagnosed with generalized tonic-clonic epilepsy with partial response to sodium valproate therapy is presented. The child experienced recurrent seizures occurring four to five times monthly over a three-year period. Alongside conventional antiepileptic medication, the patient received Amruthadya Taila Matra Vasti for 21 days and Vacha-Shampakadi Ghrita for three months as adjuvant Ayurvedic therapy. Comprehensive clinical, neurological, and Ayurvedic assessments were performed at baseline and during follow-up.
Results: Following integrative treatment, seizure…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
