Abstract No: 593 Comparing EMG and Pelvic Floor Rehab Intervention in Neurogenic and Non-Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction in Peadiatric Population: Case Report
Abstract
To share our experience and to compare and contrast the use of EMG-biofeedback and pelvic-floor(PF) exercises in two physiologically divergent bladder dysfunctions.
Case-A:10year old boy presented with Nocturnal-enuresis without any prior medical intervention. Case-B:7year old girl post-mylomeningiocele repair with symptoms of bladder dysfunction, presented with bladder fullness and urge incontinence.
Nocturnal-enuresis is frequent episodes of urine leakage during sleep. Neurogenic bladder in children with myelomeningocele presents distressing situation, persistent urine leakage can adversely affect child’s self-esteem and confidence, leading to social isolation. Resulting in renal damage and UTI’s. EMG-biofeedback and PF-exercises aid bladder control, but there are less literature to explore use of these interventions in tailored way for specific bladder dysfunction.
Assessment findings- Case-A: Presented with tight PF with delayed and incomplete relaxation.; Case-B: Presented weak PF with zero-to-minimal activation, very poor PF-awareness.
Case-A: Child underwent weekly supervised sessions of relaxation techniques, EMG-biofeedback- used specifically for PF-relaxation (gaming), for a span of 3-months.; Case-B: Child underwent PF-education and awareness, stimulation around the perineal region, EMG-biofeedback used for strengthening and awareness, PF-strengthening exercises daily for 1-month followed by 3-days/week for 3 months, and 2-days/week for 2-months. Both were advised…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
