Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and identify some related factors through direct interviews with 169 patients aged 18 years and olderwho had been diagnosed with GERD at Tra Vinh General Hospital from April to June 2025. The results showed thatcommon esophageal symptoms included acid regurgitation (81.7%), heartburn (78.1%), epigastric pain (58.6%),food regurgitation (53.8%), and globus sensation/dysphagia (57.4%). Extra-esophageal symptoms consisted of abdominal bloating and indigestion (78.1%), chest pain (76.9%), chronic cough (49.1%), and hoarseness (30.2%). Ofthe patients, 60.4% had a GERD questionnaire (GERDQ) score ≥ 8. The study identified several statistically significant factors associated with GERD (p<0.05), including alcohol consumption, intake of spicy or sour foods, high-fatdiets, late-night activities, and psychological stress. GERD was more commonly observed in middle-aged individuals, females, and manual laborers (p<0.05). It is recommended to strengthen health communication and behavioral changeinterventions to reduce risk factors and improve treatment outcomes.

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause. Reported size: 169 participants or records.
