Excessive Daytime Sleepiness Mediates Inhibitory Control Deficits in Patients with Frontal Lobe Epilepsy: An Observational Study
Abstract
Abstract Objective Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) is associated with inhibitory control deficits and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Whether EDS mediates these cognitive deficits remains unknown. Methods This observational study was conducted during May 2023 to June 2024 at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. 50 FLE patients and 50 healthy controls (HC) are included. Participants completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and an EEG-recorded Go/NoGo task. Mediation analysis evaluated EDS's role in inhibitory control. Results FLE patients exhibited lower accuracy (82.0% vs. 91.0%; PConclusions EDS exacerbates inhibitory control deficits in FLE. Improving sleep quality could be a non-invasive intervention to improve cognitive outcomes.
