The Epistemic Conflict of First and Other Serbia: A Narrative Analysis of Deep Polarisation
Abstract
Abstract This paper examines the enduring sociopolitical divide in contemporary Serbia between " First Serbia " ( prva Srbija ) and " Other Serbia " ( druga Srbija ). Moving beyond the conventional Left–Right political spectrum, which fails to capture the nuanced historical and cultural realities of post-socialist Serbian discourse, this study employs a philosophical and narrative analysis to deconstruct the value-laden orientations of both camps. By examining historical foundational texts from the anti-war Belgrade Circle alongside contemporary digital media, op-eds, and conservative critiques, we map how these opposing groups construct their normative frameworks. We argue that the antagonism between First and Other Serbia is a deep epistemic disagreement rooted in incommensurable narrative constitutions of social practices. While First Serbia derives its standards of validity from historicism, collective memory, and spatial continuity, Other Serbia grounds its legitimacy in procedural liberalism, universal rights, and European integration. Finally, the paper explores the conditions necessary to facilitate trans-narrative dialogue without reducing deep disagreement to polemical hostility.
