Facile Co-Precipitation Synthesis of Spinel CoFe3O4 Nanoparticles with Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic and Antimicrobial Performance
Abstract
Abstract The structural, optical, morphological, photocatalytic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of CoFe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were thoroughly examined after they were successfully synthesized using a simple co-precipitation method. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy were used to characterize the produced nanoparticles. With an optical band gap of 1.55 eV and strong visible-light absorption, UV-Vis analysis demonstrated exceptional visible-light responsiveness. Phase-pure spinel CoFe 3 O 4 with good crystallinity and suitable oxidation states was confirmed by Raman, XRD, and XPS investigations. Analyses using FE-SEM and EDS showed homogeneous elemental distribution and almost spherical morphology. Due to improved charge separation and reactive oxygen species production, the nanoparticles demonstrated effective visible light-driven photocatalytic activity. Significant antifungal and antibacterial effects against a variety of pathogenic microbes were also noted. These results demonstrate the potential of CoFe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as multipurpose nanomaterials for antimicrobial and environmental remediation applications.
