Fitting Bent Pegs in Square Holes: Psych Patients in EDs
Abstract
The issues relating to acute care and after hours crisis services for people with mental illness, including the practice of detention and seclusion in the emergency departments (EDs) are reviewed. The data collected from EDs around Melbourne showed both voluntary and involuntary patients waiting for up to 5 days in EDs for inpatient psychiatric beds, and multiple mentally unwell patients awaiting definitive care at one time in the ED, thus illustrating the lack of patient-centred approach in the EDs.
