Abstract

The gold standard to measure EDS in patients with OSA is MWT. Even if individuals may experience several episodes of MS during MWT, still in the presence of normal latency, MS are not considered in the data analysis. We investigate the presence of MS during MWT to identify a specific pattern of EDS in OSA patients. We enrolled 112 patient (52.3± 12.3, 80 M) who performed PSG and MWT. Patients were classified according to MWT: low latency12.832.6 (NL, n=20). BL patients showed in each trial a higher number of MS, defined as an intrusion of theta rhythms without EEG, EOG or EMG artefact lasting from 3 to 14 seconds,in comparison to LL and NN (Table 1). Furthermore, a statistically significant temporal trend in mean latency of MS across the MWT test (p=0.04) was found in the three groups (Fig. 1). While the latency in LL group was stable, the BL showed a higher latency in the first trial, and NL lower latency in the third trial (according to homeostatic and circadian process, respectively). We conclude that MS count should be enclosed in the MWT analysis and that BL patients should be considered as fighters to EDS.
