Evaluations of Hydroxyapatite-Titania Composite Coatings on Ti6Al4V Alloy Scaffolds and Their Influence on In Vitro Cell Growth and Antibacterial Activity Assays
Abstract
Calcium phosphate (Ca/P) coatings based on biomaterials are extensively utilized in bone regeneration within orthopedics due to their favorable biocompatibility, osseointegration, and osteoconductive properties. Hexagonal scaffold Ti6Al4V alloys help reduce stress shielding, integrate with the host bone, and accelerate bone formation. In this work, we utilized thermochemical treatment and electrochemical deposition procedures to produce a composite HA/TiO2 coating. The challenge is to provide scaffolds with appropriate bio-integration properties, enabling a permanent link between them and bone tissues, which is not easily achieved with just the HA layer. Our proposition is to use an intermediate titanate layer to successfully link the HA coating to the scaffold Ti6Al4V alloys. The morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the composite coating (HA/TiO2) systems were characterized utilizing FESEM/EDS and SEM for microstructure, AFM for surface roughness, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for crystallography and phase identification. Key findings indicate that increasing the voltage during the electrochemical deposition process increases the surface roughness and Ca/P values. However, further increasing the voltage to 4 volts results in the formation of microscopic cracks and voids. In vitro test results demonstrated that MC3T3-E1 cell viability and antibacterial activity against E. coli improved with the HA/TiO2 composite…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a experimental / empirical study, done in cell cultures (in vitro), not in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
