Cell Cycle: A multi-nutrient complex targeting one-carbon metabolism, methylation and cellular health: a narrative review of the evidence for eleven micronutrient and phytochemical actives
Abstract
Background: The homeostasis of the cell is maintained by tightly regulated and interconnected metabolic pathways such as folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism, the methylation cycle, glutathione redox system, and cofactor-dependent energy and glucose metabolism. The insufficiency of any trace elements that participate in the above-mentioned processes may disrupt their physiological function. Scope: This narrative review aimed to provide a mechanistic basis for the reported clinical and experimental rationale for the use of the eleven-ingredient formulation containing L-methylfolate, cyanocobalamin, pyridoxal-5-phosphate, choline, myo-inositol, thiamine, D-biotin, alpha-lipoic acid, selenium, zinc, and chromium picolinate. Methylation has been used as a theoretical basis for this review, with individual ingredients being discussed in the context of their primary role rather than one overarching theme. Findings: The combination of folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and choline was consistently associated with the regulation of homocysteine and the promotion of remethylation and transsulfuration. Alpha-lipoic acid, selenium, and zinc were each involved in the maintenance of reduced glutathione and antioxidant defence, with the connections to methylation being primarily indirect but firmly established through transsulfuration. Thiamine and biotin acted as essential cofactors in numerous enzymatic reactions, while myo-inositol and chromium were beneficial for insulin function and…
