Effect of Siddha Medicines in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Presenting with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: A Case Report
Abstract
Background: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is generally an age-related proliferative disorder characterized by enlargement of the prostate gland leading to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Conventional therapies like α-blockers and 5-α reductase inhibitors, provide relief symptomatically but may be associated with adverse effects and long-term dependence. Siddha system of medicine describes urinary disorders under Neerinai Arukkal Noi, which clinically correlates with BPH. This case report evaluates the effect of classical Siddha formulations in the management of BPH with LUTS.
Case Presentation: A 70-year male reported with the complaints of increased urinary frequency, nocturia, urgency, burning sensation during micturition, and feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Ultrasonography showed an enlargement of prostate weighing 82 g along with urinary bladder wall thickening. His initial International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) was 19 with a Quality of Life (QoL) score of 5. Results: Post-treatment evaluation revealed clear symptomatic improvement with IPSS decreasing from 19 to 1 and QoL score improving from 5 to 1. Ultrasonography revealed a notable reduction in prostate volume from 82 g to 42 g, along with resolution of…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
