Interventional Exploration of Pharmacoeconomics and Medication Modalities in Elderly Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Abstract
This study underscores the crucial role of patient counselling in improving treatment outcomes for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) by focusing on medication adherence, managing patient expectations, encouraging lifestyle changes, and fostering informed decision-making. Conducted as a six-month randomized controlled trial at KIMS Al-Shifa Super Speciality Hospital, Kerala, the study involved 82 geriatric BPH patients, who were assigned to either an intervention group (receiving counselling with pictograms) or a control group (no counselling). Objectives included identifying drug-related problems, evaluating prescribing variations, and conducting a pharmacoeconomic analysis to assess the financial impact of BPH treatment. Data were collected from patient interactions, medical records, and IPSS questionnaires. Results indicated that BPH was most common in the 60-70 age group and primarily treated by Neurology and General Medicine departments. Hypertension and diabetes were frequent comorbidities, with BPH alone in 35.4% of cases. Drug-related issues increased with age, and the intervention group demonstrated significant improvement in IPSS scores, indicating enhanced symptom management and adherence. The average cost per patient was ₹2,416.32, reflecting the substantial economic burden of BPH. Findings highlighted a high incidence of drug interactions, lack of disease awareness, and a need for patient-centred counselling. Integrating pharmacists into patient care showed a…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 82 participants or records.
