Overactive bladder: role of the urinary and vaginal microbiota and the impact of fermented RED clover isoflavones: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial
Abstract
Until a decade ago, the human urinary tract was considered a sterile system in healthy individuals.Advances in technologies have challenged this long-held doctrine of the urinary tract proximal to the urethra being a sterile environment in the absence of urinary tract infection. However, the discovery that the bladder harbors a unique resident bacterial community has directed attention to its potential role in the health and disease of the lower urinary tract.I was introduced to this research field at the Centre for Clinical Research when I was an undergraduate working with human papillomavirus and alternative splicing in vulvar cancer.I thought my future academic career would revolve around this.At the Centre for Clinical Research, there was an ongoing study showing that premenopausal and postmenopausal women had significantly different microbiota compositions. This work fostered my PhD study and gave me the possibility to finalize the study in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, which was later published in Scientific Reports. This PhD project has been an incredible journey, where I truly have expanded my scientific horizon ranging from conducting clinical study preparations and sample collection to learning about bioinformatic algorithms for microbiotic analysis. It has been a privilege to dive deep and be absorbed in such an interesting field, but it has also been tough decisions and compromises along the way.
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design.
