Who Is the Manipulator? Eight Stages of Systematic Manipulation in Intimate Relationships
Abstract
My research project focuses on systematic manipulation in intimate relationships and seeks to develop a clearer conceptual, empirical, and eventually legal framework for understanding sustained patterns of interpersonal manipulation and control. The article currently presented represents the first, conceptual stage of this broader research agenda. Its primary purpose is to introduce and organize the idea of systematic manipulation as a process that may unfold over time rather than as a collection of isolated harmful behaviors. The conceptual model identifies recurring stages and mechanisms through which manipulation may develop, including attachment formation, shifts in relational power, withdrawal and destabilization, psychological pressure, exploitation, legal or institutional involvement, and reputational harm. At this stage, the framework is intended to generate research questions and testable propositions rather than to claim that the proposed stages occur in every case or have already been empirically validated. My next research direction will be to examine whether the patterns proposed in the conceptual framework can be supported by observable evidence from real cases and larger datasets. I am particularly interested in identifying the characteristics of systematic manipulation, the frequency and combinations of different tactics, the populations in which these patterns appear, the characteristics and distribution of individuals who engage in such behaviors, and the…
