Abstract

During my PhD I got familiar with scientific literature that summed up well a feeling I already had: people are quick in attributing their successes to their own merits and in dismissing how lucky they got in the way.I am quite grateful to this section of the thesis, which allows me to reflect on how lucky I have truly been. While I am proud and happy to be arriving at the end of my PhD journey, I am certain that none of the choices I made would have gotten me here if it wasn't for all the caring people who supported me and offered me the opportunities I needed to develop myself both personally and professionally. To all of you, who were part of this journey in a way or another, my most sincere gratitude! To my supervisors, thank you for nurturing my curiosity and guiding my scientific thinking.Caroline and Kelly, thank you for always thinking along with me and for enabling me to explore topics and questions that were really meaningful to me.Thank you also for always genuinely caring about my feelings, anxieties and well-being.This truly made a difference to me in many different points of this PhD journey.Arno, thank you for always keeping your door open for my million 5-minute questions.I know now that none of them took really only five minutes.Thank you also for listening close and for constantly trying to make this interdisciplinary endeavor better.Alan and Mirre, thank you for welcoming me as a master student in Nijmegen and for making me feel part of your research…
