Abstract

Many people have supported me scientifically, personally and also financially on this road to achieving my PhD.I would like to thank them.Special thanks to Ernst Fehr, my mentor for the past four years, for helping me grow and develop as an interdisciplinary scientist. He was always more than willing to get together to develop new ideas and discuss projects.Without Ernst Fehr's willingness to take risks and without his unconditional support, I would not have had the opportunity to live out my many research interests.I would like to extend thanks to my committee members Markus Rudin and Kevan Martin.Kevan Martin, my thesis supervisor, supported me over the past four years and whenever I needed advice, he was willing to sit down with me and provide the necessary guidance.A special thank goes to Daria Knoch, for the billions of coffees we had together and for being good friend. Not the caffeine, but the gathering was the source of many creative project ideas we developed and realised together.A further thanks goes to Urs Fischbacher, who so humorously taught me how to teach experimental economics and always helped in sorting out illogical thoughts.I would like to extend thanks to Jack van Honk, with whom I did extraordinary research in the Northern Cape
