Effect of Management of Nocturia Symptoms on Sleep Quality in Adult Males: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Abstract
Men with bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are at increased risk for poor sleep quality. Nocturia and other components of LUTS are associated with sleep disturbances. Successful management of nocturia can improve sleep quality and LUTS, respectively. Despite several studies addressing the issue, no systematic review and meta-analysis are currently available. The present systematic review assessed the effectiveness of the treatment of nocturia on sleep quality in adult males. This systematic review was conducted to determine the effect of the management of nocturia symptoms on sleep quality in adult males. The research question was, “Does the management of nocturia improve sleep quality in adult males compared to nonusers or premedication status?” Relevant studies were searched on three search engines –PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. As per inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 studies were selected for qualitative synthesis, and 15 were included for quantitative synthesis. Results indicated a significant improvement in sleep quality with treatment of nocturia on the following measures hours of uninterrupted sleep (95% confidence interval [CI] of mean difference: 33.80, 46.50; P<0.00001), and subjective sleep quality assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (95% CI of mean difference: −4.92, −4.42; P<0.00001) and Jenkin sleep scale (95% CI of mean difference: −1.22, −0.12; P=0.02). This systematic review and meta-analysis conclude that the treatment of…
