The Effect of Obesity and Metformin on Influenza Vaccine Response
Abstract
Understanding the relationship between obesity and immune response is critical in managing healthcare for all individuals. Previous studies have shown that obesity may be associated with a suppressed immune response. In this study, we aim to elucidate the extent of immunosuppression in obese individuals relative to healthy weight individuals. Furthermore, we seek to investigate the effects of metformin on the immune response of type 2 diabetics; epidemiological studies show that individuals using metformin instead of other drugs have significantly lower rates of cancer. Metformin has also shown anti-inflammatory properties, and as such, may have benefits against the chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with obesity.
