Metformin for Weight Gain in Youth on Atypical Antipsychotics
Abstract
Studies have found metformin effective in reducing weight and body mass index (BMI) in youth treated with SGAs within 12–16 weeks of starting treatment. It is important to consider the potential side effects of metformin, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which may require dose adjustments or extended-release formulations.
