Effects of turbidity and total dissolved solids on microplastic removal for water treatment by jet clarifier
Abstract
Microplastics have become a topic of global concern as a type of pollutant, mainly due to their negatives effect on human health as well as marine ecosystems. As they are gradually detected in freshwaters system, understanding the influence of water characteristics on the removal efficiency of microplastics during current drinking water treatment is urgently required. There are many treatment techniques that have been applied to treat microplastics from freshwater, including conventional and advanced methods. The jet clarifier is known as the compact system (flocculation and clarification), which is the majority in treating particles solid from water. Even though this system has been applied successfully in turbidity removal, there are no studies on the removal of microplastics by jet clarifier yet. Therefore, a jet clarifier was selected as the treatment technique to investigate the effect of turbidity and total dissolved solids concentration on the removal of microplastics in this study. The study was divided into two parts, including the primary study of microplastics removal in jar test, which mainly focuses on alum concentrations at different water characteristics, and another is the investigation of the effect of turbidity and total dissolved solids on microplastics removal pilot of the jet clarifier. The result illustrated that at obtained concentration of alum (30 mg/L), the jet clarifier was able to remove approximately 72 and 80% of colloid particles in turbidity…
