Water environment research, 2020

Abstract

It is my great honor to present to you the January 2021 issue of Water Environment Research (WER). This issue contains 15 high-quality papers on a wide variety of topics related to wastewater treatment (ten papers), drinking water treatment (one paper), microbial community analysis (two papers), sediment treatment (one paper), and microplastic detection (one review paper). Among the water, wastewater, and sediment treatment papers, different innovative and novel technologies including electro-oxidation, photocatalytic degradation, electrokinetic remediation, filtration, adsorption, and biofilm system have been developed to improve the efficiencies of contaminant removal and treatment. The influences of microplastics and conductive materials on specific microbial communities are evaluated in the two microbial community analysis papers. I enjoyed reading these papers and believe that they add to the body of knowledge in the broad field of water/wastewater quality and treatment and microbial ecology. All of these papers have high levels of innovations and advancements with excellent overall scientific grading and they could also attract readers’ attention, and thus, making it very difficult for me to select the Editor’s Choice paper. The criteria that I used for my selection are mainly on the significant fundamental contributions to the field. Hopefully, the paper could bring up key points on emerging and evolving topics, and encourage submissions in the hot areas. My Editor’s…
