The Case for Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis for Tackling Lead Drinking Water Contamination
Abstract
RecommendationsL ead contamination in drinking water is a pressing public health concern today due to its harmful effects on the brain and nervous system, especially on children. 1 Recent United States infrastructure laws allocate more than $50 billion in investment through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a 100% replacement of the nation's lead service lines by 2033. 2 Furthermore, the EPA is targeting per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the forever chemicals, along with new emerging toxins, allocating $9 billion over the next five years to aid communities affected by PFAS contamination. The increasing number of violations of drinking water standards, notably in poorer rural areas and less-resourced city schools like Flint, Michigan, and Jackson, Mississippi, demands urgent action.More than 56% of Americans face lead exposure above recommended limits, impacting children's health and perpetuating socioeconomic disparities.Annual losses from lead poisoning in children are estimated to cost society $43.4 billion, 3 while lead mitigation is estimated to create $50 000 in benefits per child per year.4 Aging water infrastructure exacerbates the issue, with 850 daily main breaks costing $3 billion yearly.5 Pipe replacement, while necessary, poses logistical and financial challenges for communities and utilities alike.Main pipe replacement may still leave those with inhome lead pipes exposed.Ensuring safe water at the household tap has not been easy, and contrary…
