Error Control Coding for Digital Communication Systems Using BCH and Hamming Techniques
Abstract
Abstract Reliable transmission of digital information is fundamental to modern communication systems, where channel noise and interference inevitably introduce transmission errors that degrade data integrity. Error control coding plays a critical role in detecting and correcting these errors, thereby improving communication reliability. This study investigates the performance of two widely used error control coding techniques, namely Hamming and Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, for reliable digital communication. An error control framework comprising encoder design, channel simulation, and decoder implementation was developed to evaluate the effectiveness of each coding technique under noisy channel conditions. Hamming codes were employed to detect double-bit errors and correct single-bit errors, whereas BCH codes were implemented to detect and correct multiple-bit errors. The performance of both coding schemes was compared based on their error detection and correction capabilities under identical transmission scenarios. The results demonstrate that BCH codes provide superior error correction performance in noisy communication channels, while Hamming codes offer a computationally efficient solution for applications requiring single-error correction. The findings highlight the trade-off between coding complexity and error correction capability and provide guidance for selecting appropriate error control coding techniques for reliable digital communication systems.
