Abstract

available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28608963 Editorial Comment: The prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) increases with age, as does the occurrence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and VOIDING FUNCTION AND DYSFUNCTION, BLADDER PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY, AND FEMALE UROLOGY 887 Copyright © 2020 American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc. The question this article tries to answer is whether there is an interconnection between these conditions, as has been shown previously with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. For lower urinary tract symptoms the parameter used was International Prostate Symptom Score, including all of the components. For cardiovascular disease the Framingham risk score and the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association score were used. Correlation and multivariate logistic aggression analysis were used to predict cardiovascular disease risk severity. After adjustment of body mass index, prostate volume and prostate specific antigen only the group with severe LUTS showed a significant relationship with intermediate to high cardiovascular risk severity compared to the “normal” LUTS group. This was a study of a population at 1 point in time attempting to correlate 2 sets of risk factors. The authors acknowledge that, considering the importance of age as an affecting variable,…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 53 participants or records.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
