(188) Profiling Erectile Dysfunction in Men Under 40: A Retrospective Study of Psychogenic and Organic Etiologies and Emerging Treatment Trends
Abstract
Erectile dysfunction (ED) in men aged ≤40 years old is an area of growing concern. Extensive multinational studies estimate the prevalence of ED in young men to be 14-30%, with current studies suggesting that more young men may be seeking treatment.
This retrospective study aims to characterize ED in men aged 40 and younger by evaluating prevalence, treatment patterns, and associated psychosocial and organic comorbidities. It seeks to identify differences in management between younger and older men with ED and highlight opportunities for improving care and access to treatment for this growing population.
Retrospective data was collected from November 2015 to September 2024 from men at a single, high-volume academic institution with ICD-10 codes for erectile dysfunction. Demographic information and data on comorbidities and treatments for ED were collected. Data were analyzed using z-scores and t-tests.
Between November 2015 and September 2024, 30,286 patients were seen for ED, with an average age of 56 years (IQR: 20). Among the cohort, 16.6% (5,011) were aged ≤40 years. Men ≤40 were significantly less likely to receive prescriptions for oral therapies like sildenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil compared to men >40 (p<0.05). Out of 399 inflatable penile prostheses (IPP) surgeries, only ten involved men ≤40. For men ≤40, anxiety, sleep disorders, and depression were common, with 31.3%, 22.2%, and 21.7% of men having ICD-10 codes for these disorders, respectively. Men ≤40 with ED…
