Abstract

Objective: To carry out a study on epidemiology of ischemic optic neuropathies in our hospital. Background: Optic neuropathy refers to damage to the optic nerve due to any cause. The main symptom is vision loss among others, and it may be unilateral or bilateral. The leading cause in adults over 50 years old is anterior ischemic optic neuropathy , either arteritic (AAION) or most likey nonarteritic (NAION) . Design/Methods: Retrospective and descriptive study in order to identify all patients admitted in our hospital from 2005 until 2015 with a final diagnosis of ischemic optic neuropathy. Results: We identified 63 cases , of whom 56.6% were women and 43.3% were men. Only 4.8% of them were arteritic (AAION) , the remainder 95.2% being nonarteritic (NAION). The average age was 67.4 years in NAION patients and 77.6 years in AAION ones. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was: hypertension (65%), dyslipemia (41.6%), diabetes (33.5%) and current smoking (18.3%). Neuroimaging techniques were performed on 95% of patients, of which 95% were MRIs and 5% were CT scans . Conclusions: The most frequent etiology found in our series was NAION, in accordance with the literature in this area. Two cases were caused by carotid dissection and one case was associated with tadalafil use. Average age was higher in patients with AAION. Among both groups there was a slight female predominance and the major cardiovascular risk factor was hypertension . The visual recovery was poor in…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a case series, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
