Abstract

Background: Siphonobacter curvatus is a recently identified species within the genus Siphonobacter and has not been previously reported in human infections.

Case presentation: We report the first documented case of bloodstream infection caused by S. curvatus in a 73-year-old female with biliary abnormalities and suspected immune dysregulation. The pathogen was identified using 16S rRNA sequencing after MALDI-TOF MS and VITEK 2 failed to classify it. Empiric therapy with ceftriaxone and levofloxacin was administered, and MIC values suggested potential antimicrobial activity; the patient subsequently made a full recovery.

Conclusion: This case highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by rare pathogens and underscores the importance of molecular diagnostics and MIC data in guiding clinical management.

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
