Development and clinical applications of a whole anterior segment and retinal SS-OCT
Abstract
(English) Vision is central to human perception. It emanates from a complex organ, the human eye, starting from photodetection in the retina. However, the quality of the visual experience depends on the anatomical integrity and properties of all structures involved in the visual pathway and the dynamic processes associated with it. Since any reduction or loss of vision means a major impairment of our quality of life, many efforts have been made in the development of instruments that can objectively evaluate, diagnose and treat visual conditions and pathologies. One of the techniques that has impacted Ophthalmology the most in the last years is optical coherence tomography (OCT). It permitted to acquire ocular images with an axial resolution of a few microns, which was unprecedented at the time. Since the beginning of OCT, there has been a divide between systems dedicated to imaging of the anterior segment of the eye and the retina, due to technical difficulties associated with the eye anatomy and the technique itself. In this thesis, we dealt with the assessment of these challenges and developed an OCT system can image the whole eye and validated it clinically. This thesis is organized in four parts in line with the defined goals. Part I contains an introduction to state of the art in OCT imaging. The technical challenges to whole-eye systems designs are described in detail and afterwards a literature review about the state of the art in whole-eye OCT imaging is presented. In…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case series, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
