Abstract

Abstract Background The Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) is a widely used performance-based measure of manual function, but its internal consistency varies considerably across studies, populations, and hands, and its dimensionality remains insufficiently characterized. This exploratory, cross-sectional study aimed to explore and compare the internal structure and internal consistency of the JTHFT between the affected and non-affected hands in adults with upper limb musculoskeletal impairment. Methodology: Sixty adults with upper limb impairment, recruited from a hand therapy outpatient clinic, completed the JTHFT with affected and non-affected hand. Given non-normal item distributions, Spearman correlation matrices were used for all analyses. Separate exploratory factor analyses, using principal axis factoring, were conducted for each hand, with sampling adequacy assessed via the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure and Bartlett's test of sphericity, and the number of factors to retain determined by parallel analysis. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, with 95% confidence intervals, and McDonald's omega. Results Parallel analysis indicated a single retained factor in both hands. The affected hand showed a unidimensional structure explaining 69.0% of variance and good internal consistency (alpha = 0.864 [0.803, 0.910]; omega = 0.939 [0.907, 0.957]). The non-affected hand also showed a unidimensional structure, explaining 61.9% of variance, but…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
