The anatomical site of perforation peritonitis and their microbiological profile: A cross-sectional study in Bundelkhand region
Abstract
Background: Perforation peritonitis is a common surgical emergency with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings. The anatomical site of perforation and the associated microbial flora significantly influence clinical outcomes and therapeutic strategies.
Aims and Objectives: To determine the anatomical distribution of gastrointestinal perforations and characterize the microbiological profile, including antibiotic sensitivity patterns, among patients with perforation peritonitis in the Bundelkhand region.
Materials and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 110 patients with clinically diagnosed perforation peritonitis at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi, from February 2023 to December 2024. Intraoperative peritoneal fluid samples were analyzed for microbial culture and antibiotic susceptibility. Data were statistically assessed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences v25.0.
Results: The most affected age group was 41–60 years (38.18%) with a male predominance (74.55%). Ileal perforations (38.18%) were most common, followed by gastric (35.45%) and duodenal (10.91%) sites. Escherichia coli (56.36%) and Klebsiella spp. (26.36%) were predominant isolates. Imipenem exhibited 100% sensitivity across all isolates, while gentamicin (86.36%) and amikacin (78.18%) also showed high efficacy. Ampicillin exhibited complete resistance (100%), and ceftriaxone (52.73%) and levofloxacin (58.18%) showed moderate…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause. Reported size: 110 participants or records.
