Abstract

Background: Migraine is a neurological, chronic and multifactorial disease with genetic predisposition and association with environmental factors (poor quality of sleep, excessive use of caffeine, painkillers, fatty and spicy foods, etc.), hormonal, physical and mental factors. Its main characteristics are unilateral or bilateral throbbing headache, photosensitivity, nausea, vomiting, etc. Objective: To analyze hospitalizations for migraines and other headaches in Brazil and its regions during the period from January 2018 to December 2023. Methods: Descriptive epidemiological study using secondary data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) Tabnet, being tabulated in Microsoft Excel, according to data collected from hospitalizations during the period from January 2018 to December 2023. The variables analyzed were federative region, gender, race/ethnicity and age group. Results: In the period analyzed, there were a total of 10,313 hospitalizations for migraines and other pains, of which 62.05% (6399 cases) affected females and 37.86% (3904) males. It is noteworthy that, from 0 to 9 years old, this disease had a similar prevalence between both sexes, however, from 10 to 19 years old there was a discrepancy of 1.96 times more for females (2448 hospitalizations), The age group that most contributed to this was 15 to 19 years old. It should be added that the regions with the highest prevalence were the Northeast (2079 hospitalizations) and the Southeast (2060).…
