Prevalence of improper practice of aharavidhividhanam in migraine patients
Abstract
Ahara, the most essential requirement of all living beings, is given great importance in Ayurveda for the causa-tion and treatment of diseases. Aharavidhividhanam are the dos and don’ts regarding diet intake, as food should be taken warm, unctuous, in due measure, etc. In the present era, little importance is given to dietary rules, lead-ing to impairment of digestive function. Proper maintenance of the digestive process depends upon Ahara and the method of its intake. Migraine is a complex, multifaceted, disabling primary headache disorder often characterised by neuro-logical, autonomic and gastrointestinal symptoms. Dietary behaviours and dietary elements influence clinical manifestations of migraine. There are significant associations between Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac disease, GERD and Migraine. The study aims to find out the prevalence of improper practice of Aharavidhividhanam in migraine patients. 180 cases diagnosed with migraines were selected from the OPD of Government Ayurveda College Hos-pital, Thiruvananthapuram. Then, the prevalence of improper practice of dietetic methods was observed in mi-graine cases through consecutive sampling by using a validated questionnaire. The observed data were statisti-cally analysed for frequencies and percentages, and the significance of the observed data was tested using chi-square test. The improper practice of Aharavidhividhanam was found to be prevalent among migraine patients.
