Association between depression severity, functional impairment, and suicidal behaviour in patients with Post-Stroke Depression in a Nigerian Specialist Neurology Clinic
Abstract
Background: Suicidal behaviour is an established outcome in patients with Post-Stroke Depression (PSD). However, the role of depression severity and functional impairment in predicting the risk of suicidal behaviour among these patients is not known. This study aims to determine the association between depression severity, cognitive functioning, stroke functional outcome and suicidal behaviour in patients with PSD in a Nigerian neurology clinic. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the outpatient neurology clinic of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Eighty-nine adults diagnosed with depression following a stroke event (assessed using depression module of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Version 5.0.0), were consecutively selected and assessed with sociodemographic questionnaire, Mini-Mental State Examination, modified Rankin Scale, and Beck Scale of Suicidal Ideation.
Result: Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between cognitive functioning and suicidal ideation (F=4.09; p=0.02) and a significant negative correlation between cognitive functioning and severity of suicidal ideation (r=-0.24; p=0.02). A statistically significant difference exists between the cognitive functioning (p=0.03) and functional outcome (p=0.02) of patients with PSD who attempted suicide compared with those who did not attempt suicide. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed poor cognitive functioning (B=-0.12; p=0.03) and poor stroke…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause.
