MP13-11 a preconception cohort study of nicotine vaping and incidence of spontaneous abortion
Abstract
provided complete data on vaping. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% con fi dence intervals (CIs) for the association between vaping and SAB incidence, adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors. RESULTS: Mean age was 32 years for males and 30 years for females with 85% identifying as white. In the full cohort, 13% of females reported current vaping, 3% current cigarette smoking, and 11% former smoking at baseline. In the couple-based cohort, 19% of males reported current vaping at baseline. SAB occurred in 22% of pregnancies in the full cohort (n [ 6,136 females) and 24% of pregnancies in the couple-based cohort (n [ 1,668 couples). In the couple-based cohort, there was a nearly null association between current male vaping and SAB incidence (HR 0.95, 95% CI 0.72-1.26), and a modest but imprecise positive association between female vaping (HR 1.31, 95% CI 0.61-2.79) and SAB incidence. In the full cohort, relative to no female tobacco use, HRs were 1.03 for female vaping only (95% CI 0.82-1.29), 0.97 for female smoking only (95% CI 0.81-1.16), and 0.92 for female vaping and smoking (95% CI 0.73-1.16). Additional analysis of female participants after stratifying by fi ner categories of smoking status (current, former, or never) did not identify any meaningful association with SAB incidence. CONCLUSIONS: Nicotine vaping in either partner during the preconception period was not appreciably associated with SAB incidence.…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a cohort study, done in people. Its evidence level is 3 of 5 (Moderate · trial / cohort / secondary analysis). Trials without a large randomized design, cohorts and secondary analyses give moderate evidence.
