Abstract

Abstract Periostin has emerged as a potential marker of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. This study investigated the relationship between serum periostin levels and metabolic abnormalities, lipid parameters, and atherogenic risk in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia. The interactions of periostin with commonly used metabolic drugs were also assessed using molecular docking.

Methods:: This case–control study included 45 patients with newly diagnosed T2DM and dyslipidemia and 45 healthy controls. Serum periostin was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Glucose parameters, lipid profile, kidney function tests, and atherogenic indices were evaluated. Correlation analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Molecular docking assessed interactions between periostin, metformin, and atorvastatin.

Results:: Serum periostin levels were significantly higher in patients than in healthy controls. Periostin was positively correlated with fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, VLDL-C, non-HDL-C, and the atherogenic index of plasma and negatively correlated with HDL-C. No significant correlation was observed with creatinine or BMI. ROC analysis showed good diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.881), with 91.1% sensitivity and 62.2% specificity at a cut-off value of 9.05 ng/mL. Multivariate logistic regression identified…
