Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, its contributing factor and its relationship with depression among private medical students of Islamabad: an analytical cross-sectional study
Abstract
Objective: To assess the factors contributing to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (OSD) in private medical students.
Study Design: An analytical cross-sectional study.
Place and Duration: This study was conducted from January 1st to September 30th, 2022 at Fazaia Medical College, Islamabad.
Methodology: All respondents who gave consent were included and those who were previously diagnosed with mental health disorders were excluded.196 responses were collected using a stratified random sampling technique. Yale-Brown obsessive compulsive scale (Y-BOCS), Albert Health Services depression scale (AHS scale of depression), and a self-made questionnaire were used. Data was analyzed by SPSS 23. Descriptive and Inferential analysis was done by calculating percentages, frequencies, cross tabulation, Chi-square test, and Regression analysis. Data was presented in tables and charts.
Results: For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders (OCD) screening, out of 196 – 26% showed subclinical symptoms, 35% showed mild symptoms, 28% showed moderate symptoms, 10% showed severe symptoms and 1% showed extreme symptoms. Cross tabulation showed that contamination and miscellaneous obsessions were the most common among those who screened positive for OCD. For contributory factors, all six factors had a p-value < 0.005, which is statistically significant. Regression analysis then showed that childhood trauma (OR 1.773 P-value 0.005) was the most noteworthy in the development of OCD. Those who screened positive…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause.
